United Way supports Cold Snap Inn in South Okanagan
December 7, 2009
UNITED WAY SUPPORTING "COLD SNAP INN"
United Way contributed $500 today towards set up costs for the "Cold Snap Inn", providing temporary shelter in Penticton for people when it gets cold this winter.
"United Way encourages community partnerships and this is a perfect example of our community coming together," explained United Way volunteer chair Cliff Bristow when he handed the cheque to Christine Simmons, Director of Community Ministries for the Salvation Army.
"Cold Snap Inn" is an initiative spearheaded by the Salvation Army in partnership with many local churches, Emergency Services, the South Okanagan Similkameen Brain Injury Society, the provincial government and the City of Penticton.
United Way has raised $82,500 in the South Okanagan-Similkameen; this is 55% of the $150,000 goal for the fall fundraising campaign that ends January 31, 2010.
"The community is really stepping up to support the increased social needs that we are seeing this year as a result of tougher economic times," said Bristow. "But we still have a ways to go to meet the needs of our community partners."
Dollars raised help support 14 local health and social service agencies in the South Okanagan-Similkameen. United Way Community Partners deliver vital programs and services throughout the year to thousands of people who depend on their support.
