United Way of the Central & South Okanagan/Similkameen Blog

Share the Wealth

January 20, 2010

To paraphrase a certain bank slogan "We're Richer Then We Think."

Our United Way campaign is almost over and we will have raised more dollars than ever before to help locally. As a result, one would think people are tapped out.

Well think again.

Events in Haiti and the outpouring of generosity from individual Canadians (matched by the federal government) indicate that we have the capacity to give beyond what would or should be expected.

If you're not sure what to give I recommend you follow a simple guideline. Give 1% of your annual income. For example, if you make $30,000 give $300, $80,000 give $800. Remember, this is just a guideline.

Personally, I believe we should and can give more than 1%. Here are a couple of organizations that you may wish to donate to.  Red Cross, Salvation Army and Doctors without Borders.

As my mom used to say "the joy in living is the joy in giving".
