November 28, 2017– Just as Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season, GivingTuesday is the opening day of the giving season. Giving Tuesday Okanagan mobilized local non-profits to celebrate Giving Tuesday November 28, 2017 at civic celebration events in Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon.
GivingTuesday, the global day of generosity, continues to gain traction across the country in its fifth year, with thousands of partner organizations and millions of Canadians expected to take part. Since 2013, GivingTuesday has united millions of Canadians to support and champion the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live.
The impact of GivingTuesday goes well beyond charitable donations, inspiring giving in all its forms. From coast to coast to coast, people are embracing this day as an opportunity to raise money for local charities and non-profits, run food and clothing drives, give blood, encourage kindness, help a neighbour and celebrate generosity.
So far more than 6,000 Canadian charities, businesses and community groups have used GivingTuesday to rally generosity and help make the world a better place in countless ways.
The Giving Tuesday Okanagan civic movement kicked off in 2015 with mayoral proclamation events in all 3 major cities: Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon. Our goal for 2017 is to encourage organizations and individuals to give back to their community whether it be with time, talent or treasure. The Okanagan community is very generous and we all contribute to its success. “Giving Tuesday” and any other Tuesday in the future is an opportunity to make a difference.

“On Giving Tuesday, we look forward to meeting up with our community partners at the civic celebrations,” says Helen Jackman, Executive Director of United Way CSO. “Giving Tuesday gives us an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of the giving season and thank our donors and volunteers for all they do to support community.”
The civic proclamation events were organized by Marianne Dahl, Marketing and Events Manager of United Way CSO and Richelle Leckey with Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs. Special thanks to McDonalds and Tim Horton’s who supplied coffee and treats at the civic events.
