Child Safety Initiative 2018-08-15T20:23:24+00:00

This unique initiative, funded by Kal Tire, United Way CSO, Kelowna General Hospital, and Central Okanagan Community Foundation, provides new car seats to families in financial need. The car seats are distributed to families in 8 communities throughout the Okanagan/Similkameen Valley thanks to a network of community partners who provide social services.

The Need

BCAA estimates that as many as five per cent – roughly 23,000 – of children in British Columbia don’t use a child car seat when travelling by car, despite the clear advantages to using one. The US Center for Disease Control estimates that proper car seat use reduces the risk for death of infants by 71% and of toddlers by 54%. Unfortunately, kids can go unprotected because of poverty and lack of information.

United Way believes that no family should have to put their child’s safety at risk because of limited finances.

Distribution Partners

These social service agencies act as distribution centres in each community and refer low-income families:

  • Desert Sun Resource and Counselling Centre – Oliver
  • Kelowna Community Resources
  • Kelowna General Hospital Perinatal Unit
  • Lake Country Health Planning
  • Lower Similkameen Community Services Society – Keremeos
  • OneSky Community Resources (Formerly PDCRS)
  • Princeton Family Services
  • Summerland Food Bank & Resource Centre
  • Westbank First Nation Early Years
