Workplace Campaign Spotlight – Costco 2016

For over 10 years Costco Wholesale Kelowna has been United Way CSO’s #1 Workplace Campaign and corporate supporter.  In 2016, Costco raised $93,333 with 100% employee participation.  Costco matches their employee donations by 50%.  They also encourage their employee’s involvement in supporting the community through the Pushor Mitchell United Way Day of Caring® and various other initiatives and event sponsorships such as the Agency non-profit bus tour. They also hold an amazing kickoff breakfast for their employees and a wonderful windup BBQ.

Costco also provides additional grants to local non-profit agencies and worked in partnership with United Way to find out what services are creating impact for families in our region. As a result, they selected Dragonfly Pond Family Society to be the recipient of one of these grants. Dragonfly Pond Family Society has been supporting families with children who have complex care needs and /or disabilities in the South Okanagan since 2000.

Costco also partakes in the United Way Day of Caring. Day of Caring allows local workplaces like Costco to give back to their community by assisting agencies in the Central and South Okanagan with various projects around their facilities. They are a unique way for workplaces to donate employee time to helping an agency in the community. Their last Day of Caring was in October 2016 where they helped out at Arion Therapeutic Farm. By participating in a Day of Caring, Costco helped increase agencies’ capacity for helping to complete jobs that would otherwise go unfinished or take agency staff away from their important roles helping people in need.

“Personally, I feel that in order for a business to be successful, it must play an active role in helping to ensure that the community in which it operates is as healthy as possible.  The United Way is a great vehicle working towards improving the overall health and well being of our community – I am proud to be part of such a fantastic team.”
